Introduction
Jaipur Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan state in India. The project is managed by Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC), a company incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956, and owned by the Government of Rajasthan.
History and Development
The Jaipur Metro project was initiated to provide a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transportation system to the rapidly growing city of Jaipur. The project was approved in 2009, and construction began in November 2010.
The first phase of the Pink Line, from Mansarovar to Chandpole, was inaugurated on June 3, 2015, making Jaipur the sixth city in India to have a metro rail system. The second phase, from Chandpole to Badi Chaupar, was completed and opened to the public on September 23, 2020.
Current Network
Currently, Jaipur Metro operates on one line:
- Pink Line: Running from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, covering a distance of approximately 11.4 kilometers with 11 stations. The line serves major areas of the city including Mansarovar, Shyam Nagar, Ram Nagar, Civil Lines, Railway Station, Sindhi Camp, and the Walled City.
The second line, the Orange Line, is currently under construction and will run from Sitapura Industrial Area to Ambabari, covering a distance of approximately 23.8 kilometers.
Technology and Infrastructure
Jaipur Metro uses standard gauge tracks and operates with modern air-conditioned trains. The system features:
- Automated fare collection system
- Passenger information display systems
- CCTV surveillance for security
- Disabled-friendly access with elevators and ramps
- Energy-efficient lighting and air conditioning
Fares and Timings
The fare structure of Jaipur Metro (effective from January 31, 2025) is based on the distance traveled:
- Up to 2 km: ₹10
- 2-5 km: ₹15
- 5-8 km: ₹20
- More than 8 km: ₹25
Various ticketing options are available, including single journey tokens, stored value cards, and tourist cards.
The metro operates from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day, with trains running at the following frequencies:
- Peak hours (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM): Every 4-6 minutes
- Off-peak hours: Every 8-10 minutes
- Early morning (6:00 AM - 8:00 AM) and late evening (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM): Every 10 minutes
Future Plans
The Jaipur Metro has ambitious plans for expansion:
- Orange Line: The construction of the Orange Line is ongoing and will significantly enhance the connectivity of the city's southern and northern areas.
